Aurora is a large city in northern Illinois. It is 40 miles west of downtown Chicago and 60 miles south of the Wisconson state border. According to the 2016 United States Census Bureau report, Aurora is populated by approximately 201,110 people. Aurora is the largest city in Kane County.
Aurora is in an area of Illinois that was inhabited by Native America Indians before the arrivals of European settlers. Following the Black Hawk War, settlers arrived in the area of modern-day Aurora. A pair of brothers whose last names were McCarty opened on a mill on the east side of the Fox River and in 1837 a post office was opened. A community was formed and developed into a village. After combining with another village on the opposite side of the Fox River, the villages became incorporated in 1857 as the City of Aurora.
